What is a Haakaa?

A haakaa is a silicone breast pump that creates a gentle suction to the breast while collecting milk that would otherwise spill or leak into a nursing pad. It’s basically the main breastfeeding essential a mother needs.

The Haka pump is so good for just building the stash. You can take them wherever you want. They are not big and bulky like a normal manual or electric pump.

You can literally put them in your purse and grab & go.

I’ve also used them in public with my nursing cover while breastfeeding. I don’t recommend this if you have an active baby because they can knock the Haka off but for those first newborn stages, it’s an excellent pump to use!

Who is it for?

The haakaa silicone breast pump is for every nursing, breastfeeding, new, and postpartum mama who wants to save or increase her milk supply!

Unlike regular electric or manual pumps, the haakaa silicone breast pump works by suction and is hands-free! Which makes me love it even more so than my electric pump!

I love using the haakaa as a convenient way to collect milk while feeding my baby on the opposite breast. I collect more milk this way because I often leak while feeding.

I don’t have to use a breast pad and instead can use the haakaa.

Can Haakaa Breast Pump Increase Milk Supply?

Depends. The haakaa, like any other electric or silicone pump, can help you make more milk, depending on your use.  It’s simple supply and demand.

Think about when you are at a restaurant and receive water from your waiter. You drink all the water, and your waiter brings you another glass. If you did NOT drink all your water, the waiter doesn’t bring you anymore.

Same thing with our bodies producing milk. If you use your haakaa pump often and it drinks up the milk, your body will in turn, produce more milk.

When I pump with my haakaa, it is usually simultaneously while feeding. I have also used it with my Medela manual pump when on vacation or out and about.

I find that I get the most out of it when I am feeding or pumping on the opposite side of the haakaa.

Also, when using a haakaa pump, I keep it on until it has stopped dripping. This allows it to grab the most milk.

Once it is finished and the haakaa is full, I will take that haakaa off, empty it into a bottle, and apply it again just in case some more milk is to be collected.

What Happened: Did the Haakaa Increase Milk Supply?

Silicone breast pumps, like the Haakaa or the Elvie Curve, are notorious for their convenience for breastfeeding moms.

That’s why I opted to use them while breastfeeding my now three children.

How Much Milk Do I Get?

I have found that my milk has increased by a couple of ounces per feeding while using haakaa pumps compared to when not using them. I pump about four ounces in the morning, even after feeding 2-3 times at night.

I am currently on my third breastfeeding journey and exclusively breastfeeding. I have collected enough milk to give to my two toddlers each day (because my baby won’t take a bottle).

Yes, I have three children under four, as I’m updating this post. Pray for me.

Ways To Use Breast Pumps To Increase Supply

1. Use a Pump Before the Baby Eats

To increase your breast milk supply, try pumping before your baby eats. This will stimulate your body to produce milk.

2. Use a Breast pump After the Baby Eats

Pumping after your baby eats can also help to increase your supply. This is because when your baby sucks on your nipple, it stimulates your body to produce more milk. When you continue pumping after the baby finishes, you will empty your breast and trigger your body to make more.

3. Use a Breast Pump Every 2-3 Hours

Pumping every 2-3 hours is another great way to increase your milk supply. This will stimulate your body to produce milk and help build a freezer stash for when you return to work or school.

4. Increase the Suction on Your Breast Pump

If the suction on your breast pump isn’t powerful, try increasing it. This will help to stimulate your body to increase milk production.

5. Massage Your Breasts While using an Electric Pump

Massaging your breasts while you pump can also help to increase your milk supply. This helps to stimulate extra milk flow and can also help to loosen any clogged ducts.

6. Drink Plenty of Fluids

Drinking plenty of water is important when you’re trying to increase your milk supply. This helps to keep your body hydrated and can also help to increase the amount of milk you produce.

7. Eat a Healthy Diet

Eating a healthy and nutritious diet is also essential to increase your breast milk supply. Eating foods that are rich in nutrients will help to keep your body healthy and will also promote the production of milk. Ensure you fuel your body to help maintain your health and milk while using a haakaa breast pump.

There you have it! Increasing your supply with a haakaa is the way to go if you don’t want to be attached to cords and machines. Use the tips above to boost your supply without committing too much time or energy!
