Kind of hard to get pregnant when you have little to no cervical mucus to help the swimmers along, right? Right!
In this post, I share how to increase cervical mucus naturally, the same tips I used to get pregnant when my cervical mucus was lacking.
Cervical mucus isn’t a term most like to say out loud. It’s similar to “moist” where it just sounds weird to speak and talk about, right?
Or am I the only one who doesn’t like the word moist?
Well, like it or not, that’s what we want when it comes to cervical mucus. We desire the wet, egg-white-like mucus that is so beneficial for sperm to get through and make babies.
I mean, that’s why we’re here right? The fertile window should be the only time you see cervical mucus (unless you’re pregnant) and the fertile window is for just that, fertility.
So let’s dive in (no pun intended) to how we can create a more “moist” (cringes) atmosphere for our husbands to get us pregnant naturally and increase our chances for implantation!

How to Increase Cervical Mucus Naturally
- Stay Hydrated
Drink your water sis! 96% of cervical mucus is made of water. Wow, what a statistic!
Just like our bodies are mostly made of water, we need water to thrive. Therefore, if you don’t have water, you’re drying up your eggs. Okay, that might be a little drastic…
But if you are not drinking enough water to be able to give your body the necessary fluids that it needs, your body is going to retain that water for the organs it needs to hydrate.
Our reproductive system is not number one on that list for water storage purposes inside your body.
Drinking enough water will enable you to have enough fluids for your body to disperse to those reproductive organs and to help you increase your cervical mucus naturally during your TTC journey.
When I conceived my first child I was drinking almost a gallon of water a day.
- Grapefruit Juice
Weird right? Grapefruit juice is actually a great way to increase and improve your cervical mucus BUT if you are taking certain medications(check with your doctor) then this justice might not be best for you. I would definitely recommend having a chat with your doctor if you are on medications because it can have different reactions to certain prescriptions.
- Eat Your Greens
Sis, just eat your greens. Go get the spinach and kale. I know I know it may not be the best tasting but go make it taste good.
One of my go-tos and favorites is adding a handful of spinach to my fertility smoothies or making a strawberry and cucumber spinach salad with balsamic vinaigrette.
Eating leafy greens will create an environment in your body that your husband’s sperm will love.
The female body, you want to make sure you have an alkaline environment. The vagina is naturally acidic for most of our monthly cycle. Leafy greens are alkaline and will help balance out the environment.
If you want to help the sperm get to the egg, then you need to eat your spinach.
- Daily Probiotics
As previously stated, when our body is naturally acidic, we need to create a more alkaline environment for our bodies when we’re trying to conceive. Probiotics will help with that.
They help increase the good bacteria in your body.
During your LH surge (approaching ovulation) your body will become more alkaline and help your body to produce that fertile cervical mucus. This environment will help the sperm get to the egg a lot faster.
- Avoid Caffeine
If you know me, you know this is a hard one for me. But this tip circles back to making sure we stay hydrated. Caffeine can actually act as a diuretic, meaning it will take water away from your body.
We do not want to be dehydrated while we are trying to conceive. We want ALL of the water.
- Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Salmon, tuna, and chia seeds. What do all of these have in common? Since chia seeds are not seafood, let’s go with the fact that they are all omega 3 fatty acids. Yum!
These particular fatty acids can help decrease inflammation in the body and can improve blood flow. They can also increase cervical mucus.
When conceiving my first child I took a fish oil supplement. It was disgusting.
With conceiving my second and third child I opted for this vegan protein superfood that has chia seed protein in the formula. I add it to my fertility smoothies or shakes daily.
Last but not least, and I’m not sure if we can technically call it natural, but Preseed. If you don’t have any cervical mucus at all or even if you do then try Preseed.
Preseed is a sperm-friendly lubricant, a lot of lubes out there are more like sperm enemies, but this one is super friendly.
It actually mimics the fertile cervical mucus and helps create that healthy sperm environment that the sperm need in order to reach the eggs.

What is the function of cervical mucus?
A key fertility sign is your cervical mucus. The function of cervical mucus is to provide an optimal environment for sperm to reach an egg for conception.
Cervical mucus or also known as cervical fluid or sometimes referred to as vaginal discharge can really help you in determining when your fertile window is and when you are most fertile.
Cervical Mucus Stages:
- Dry (no cervical fluid) or damp
- Sticky, crumbly, rubbery
- Creamy, lotiony, milky
- Eggwhite, slippery, clear, stretchy (fertile cervical mucus)
For your fertile window, we’re going to focus on those last two: creamy and egg white. When you get into your fertile window your cervical mucus will become creamier and wetter.
When you are approaching ovulation your cervical mucus will become egg white, slippery clear, or stretchy and I say “or stretchy” because it can also just not be stretchy at all.
You also might notice streaked egg white cervical mucus which can often be a sign of ovulation spotting.
So sis, if you don’t learn ANYTHING but THIS: When you see egg white cervical mucus it is GO TIME. Grab hubby and start trying, like right now!
Frequently Asked Questions About Cervical Mucus
Cervical mucus watery but not stretchy?
Yes, cervical mucus can be watery but not stretchy. Watery cervical mucus can still be fertile without being stretchy and be optimal for your fertility journey.
No egg white cervical mucus can I still get pregnant?
Yes, you can still get pregnant without the presence of egg white cervical mucus. Creamy and wet cervical mucus can still allow sperm to penetrate in the fertile window. My latest pregnancy (baby #3) was conceived with only creamy and wet cervical mucus. No egg white was present.
Can you have cervical mucus after ovulation?
Yes, you can have cervical mucus after ovulation but it may be an indicator of an infection or hormonal imbalance. Usually, cervical mucus is reserved for the fertile window when your cervix begins to open. Your cervix closes after ovulation your body also has a mechanism to block the production of cervical mucus afterward to prevent bacteria and other things that don’t belong, traveling up towards the uterus.
How do you check your cervical mucus?
The best way to check your cervical mucus is to wipe front to back with a tissue before urinating. Another way is to check your underwear for signs of cervical mucus. The last way is to insert two clean fingers. You’ll want to know that when checking this way your cervix will often feel wet and moist as it should be throughout your cycle. You’ll want to make sure you know your own body to identify specific changes in the wetness and consistency.
Final Thoughts on Cervical Mucus
Although cervical mucus can be a cringing subject it’s probably the most important when it comes to you trying to get pregnant. If you’re noticing that you have little to no cervical mucus then try some or all of these methods to help the process along!
