The very first step to start building a relationship with God is to repent. If you’re going to surrender to Him, want to build a relationship, and understand Him more, then repentance is the way.
Romans 10:9 says if you confess with your mouth Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead you will be saved!
So what does that mean?
It means we need to make confession to God about the things that we’ve done and it doesn’t have to be like a list that you bring to a priest inside a box of a church. GOD KNOWS. He knows about every bad thing that has happened in your life and guess what? He LOVES you anyways *insert praise dance!
We just need to come to him and tell him “Lord I repent of all of these things that I have done wrong in my life that don’t align with your word and character and I want to come to you and build a relationship with you so that I can get better!”
The second part of that scripture says that we need to believe in our heart that Jesus is Lord. God sent his son Jesus to die on the cross so that our sins may be forgiven.
We’ve all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God but God sent his son because He loves us so much.
Accept Jesus into Your Heart
Repentance is that first step and then acceptance comes next.
We need to accept Jesus into our hearts. It is hard to accept sometimes as humans we struggle with acceptance (I know this was true for me). Especially, accepting love.
Really if you want to start building a relationship with God then you have to know that God is all about love and we have to be willing to accept that love and that love is Jesus so accept Jesus into your heart today!
Have Conversations with God
Next I want to give you some practical ways that you can start building a relationship with God. First up is prayer. You might be thinking “I don’t know how to pray” or “I don’t know what to do” or “I don’t know what to say”.
I want to make it super simple for you!
Praying is literally a conversation with God. Do you know how to make conversation, even if it’s awkward at first? Then you’re good!
For me, praying started in a prayer journal, like this one on Amazon, because I didn’t know what to say either but I knew how to write.
So I wrote.
I would just write out my feelings. I would write my prayers out and it was just a “Dear Lord” and I would just start writing my feelings out.
You can also say the Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
It’s a perfect prayer to say day and night. I actually say this prayer with my children every morning and every night.
The Lord’s Prayer is just a simple prayer that can guide your prayers in regards to how you pray when you start building that relationship with God.
For example, “Our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name” which means just honoring God and getting into his presence. “Thy kingdom come thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven” that means that His will above our will and so you can just continue to pray his will over your life. “Give us this day our daily bread” which is the word of God. He gave you this day you can just Praise Him for just waking you up in the morning, right?!
You can just go down the verses of the Lord’s Prayer and really pray over your life
Praying in that way will help you develop your prayer life but I started like I said with a prayer journal and I literally have a prayer journal for each year that I started my relationship with God and I can look back at 2015 and see the growth! Whew!
I can also look back at that prayer journal and see the prayers that I was praying even when I was a newbie in Jesus. Those prayers that I prayed have now come into fruition! PTL!
I can look at those prayer requests and see that God was yet working even back then.
Learn More about Jesus
So the last thing to start building a relationship with God is to start reading the Bible. You can start in the New Testament. I would advise starting with Jesus’ Ministry, that’s where I started. Jesus’ life and ministry starts at Matthew and then through Mark, Luke, and John.
Read about his life, ministry and how Jesus led his disciples.
Those are some ways that you can start building a relationship with God today and grow deeper into your faith!
